A call to action for congregations to sign up volunteers who will participate in an effort to feed the hungry!
WHAT: A one-day event on SUNDAY OCTOBER 18; 10 A.M. 2 P.M.
Volunteers will work in an assembly line to weigh, measure, package and seal a protein-rich, orzo-based food for the hungry. Our goal is to pack 40,000 meals in four hours.
WHERE: The Valley Alliance offices at the JCC in West Hills.
WHO: A consortium of congregations and schools in the five-valley area supported by the Valley Alliance. Temple Ahavat Shalom is the lead organization with co-sponsors MAZON and the West Valley Rabbinic Task Force. The food will be distributed by SOVA.
Volunteers from all age groups of congregationsfamilies, students, seniors, Mens’ Club and Sisterhood can participate.
HOW: Project Elijah, a non-profit foundation in Des Moines, Iowa, has developed the packing system. They will ship all of the food and assembly equipment and will send their director to train volunteers and oversee the event. (Project Elijah has run these “packings” in Iowa, Minnesota, Washington, D.C., and at the national conventions for NFTY and BBYO. They are expected to pack some 350,00 meals this year.)
C
OST: All costs will be covered through a generous grant of $15,000 from the Valley Alliance and an additional $5000 from an anonymous donor. All work will be done on a volunteer basis.
