1. Learn how to respond
Several organizations are committed to supporting Israel’s survival. They all have websites with valuable and up-to-date information about what’s going on in Israel and how we can help:
- www.CAMERA.org - Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA) is a media-monitoring, research and membership organization devoted to promoting accurate and balanced coverage of Israel and the Middle East.
- www.AIPAC.org - The American Israel Public Affairs Lobby
- www.StandWithUs.com highly-successful activists for Israel
- www.helpuswin.org provides information about the war with Hamas and gives specific suggestions about what we can do to help Israel (website is run by StandWithUs).
- www.JNF.org The Jewish National Fund
- www.URJ.org The official website for the Reform Movement
- www.ARZA.org Association of Reform Zionists of America
- www.EyeOnTheUN.org A “watchdog” group which reports on anti-Israel bias in the United Nations.
2. Write a letter or email
AIPAC needs us to write to our U.S. Senators and Representatives thanking them for voting to support Israel or to tell then what action is needed on new legislation. AIPAC puts out a weekly list of issues to address in our correspondence with lawmakers and even provides links to email addresses of Members of Congress. See AIPAC website above and click on the “Action” link in the right hand corner.
Newspapers and broadcast media The news is very frequently unbalanced in its reporting about Israel. We need to change that! Tell reporters, editors and news managers what you think about their stories and op/ed pieces.
3. Write your own posting
Support Israel by responding to negative posts on websites and blogs. Write something about Israel on your Facebook (StandWithUs has graphics and articles you can cut and paste. There is a link to the graphics on their home page.) StandWithUs also has a new website devoted to support Israel in its war with Hamas. See HelpUsWin website information above.
3. Donate money
- The URJ runs a humanitarian program to help the needy in Sderot and other cities in the South. They are also taking families in these areas for a day of respite at such places as amusement parks and beaches out of rocket range. The Union is working with Keren B'Kavod, a project of the Israel Religious Action Center and other agencies. To make a donation click on the “Donate” link at the top of the URJ home page.
- The Jewish National Fund (JNF) sells tree and water (for development of methods to get water to the Negev) certificates on its website. These are great for commemorating any life event, or to just say, “Thanks!” to a friend or colleague. www.JNF.org
4. SPEAK UP!
When you hear poorly-informed criticism about Israel say SOMETHING! If you’re at school or at work join in the discussion. Don’t let people get away with calling Israel an “apartheid state” or equating “Zionism with racism.” Gently inform them with the facts. And support Eretz Yisrael.
